(The Center Square) - California experienced nearly a 25% decrease in vehicle thefts statewide in 2025, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom. The statistic was published Tuesday in a press release that noted Newsom assigned California Highway Patrol officers to work alongside local law enforcement agencies to suppress crime.

But on Wednesday, the leader of a sheriffs association said more credit should go to local law enforcement than to the state.
