Canton police have arrested a woman and charged her with second-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old child, after charging her boyfriend with murder earlier this month.
According to the Canton Police Department, officers responded at about 11:29 a.m. Aug. 3 to a home in the 300 block of Cartersville Street, where they had received a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old boy. The child was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
After interviewing Celso Edison Vicente Y Vicente, 22, the live-in boyfriend of the child’s mother, police arrested him and charged him with malice murder and first degree cruelty to children.

According to Canton Police, Thursday evening detectives interviewed the child’s mother, Devorah Diaz Perez, 18. After the interview and more investigation, police and the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office developed probable cause to arrest Diaz Perez, CPD reported.
Diaz Perez is charged with second-degree murder, second degree cruelty to children and reckless conduct. She was transported to the Cherokee County jail, where on Friday she remained without bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
The police department said because criminal charges are pending, it will not release more details about “statements made during interviews, evidence collected, or other circumstances that may become part of the judicial process.”
“The death of a child is heartbreaking, and our detectives remain committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation,” Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell said in a statement. “We appreciate the continued assistance of our law enforcement and criminal justice partners as we work to protect the integrity of this case and allow the judicial process to move forward.”
