In 2025, Iowa Environmental Council worked with Woodbury County residents to install air quality monitors in the county. A year later, air quality data shows the county frequently has acute air pollution events. 

The council analyzed data from surrounding polluters and found that fossil fuel combustion from local coal-fired power plants, emissions from local processing facilities and vehicle emissions caused a “concerning pattern of long-term exposure” in the Siouxland region.
