More child deaths possibly linked to abuse and neglect in Louisiana have been investigated so far this year than in all of 2025, and the number of proven fatal incidents is on pace to surpass last year’s count according to the state’s child welfare agency.

Leaders with the state Department of Children and Family Services shared these numbers Monday with a panel of state lawmakers, including two who tried to shutter the agency this past legislative session. It was part of a daylong hearing of the state Senate Select Committee on Women and Children, which has been a frequent forum for airing DCFS problems.
