Louisiana has the highest rate of poor military veterans in the nation with more than 22,000 former service members living below the poverty line, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau and Veterans Administration data.

The analysis from Vettory.org, an information platform for veterans and low-income households, found 8.1% of Louisiana’s estimated 278,000 veterans — roughly one out of every 12 — lived in poverty from 2019-23. The rate was more than 2 percentage points above the national average of 5.96%.
