(The Center Square) – The Shreveport Police Officer's Association is suing the city of Shreveport and three Police Department leaders, saying officers are being illegally forced to work mandatory overtime because of chronic staffing shortages.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Caddo Parish District Court, seeks a declaratory judgment that the city's overtime policy violates Louisiana law and asks a judge to prohibit the city from requiring officers to work beyond statutory limits. The petition names the city, Police Chief Wayne Smith, Deputy Chief Michael Tyler and Assistant Chief Colette Kelly as defendants.
