SHREVEPORT, La. — A long-standing community initiative is once again helping local students prepare for the upcoming school year. Registration is underway for the 22nd annual back-to-school shoe and backpack giveaway, hosted by the African American Celebration Parade Committee.
Since its inception, the program has provided over 36,000 pairs of new shoes to regional students. Founder Barbara Norton emphasizes that the event aims to boost student self-esteem as they head back to the classroom.
"We know that they all have a winning chance to be able to accomplish their dreams and their goals," Norton said.
Families can register at the Shopper Value Foods location on North Market Street through Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The giveaway event will take place this Saturday at the Walmart on Pines Road. Parents must bring a photo ID, proof of government assistance, and their children to participate.
