SHREVEPORT, La. - In April 1991, the first-ever KTBS St. Jude Dream Home was given away. It was merely an idea from a doctor and a television station that said "yes, we can."
Dr. Donald Mac had a client in their house that had a prefabricated house he wanted to give away. Dr. Mac had gone to other television stations with the idea prior to KTBS. KTBS said the idea was "extreme," but had a chance.
It worked. The idea spread from KTBS to other news stations in Louisiana, then nationwide.
36 years later, almost $800 million has been raised for St. Jude. Thousands of homes have been built across the country.
Rick Rowe dove deep into the history of the KTBS 3 St. Jude Dream Home, visiting with the people who executed on the vision and dream of Dr. Mac.
