SHREVEPORT, La. — As families across the ArkLaTex prepare for Fourth of July cookouts and holiday gatherings, federal health officials are urging people to practice safe food handling after a rise in cases of a foodborne parasitic illness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 145 people in 17 states have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis after becoming sick between May 1 and June 16. Louisiana is among the states reporting cases.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, which is typically spread by consuming contaminated fresh produce or water. The illness is more common during the spring and summer months, when fresh fruits and vegetables are widely consumed.
The CDC says 20 people have been hospitalized this year, but no deaths have been reported.
Health officials emphasize there is no evidence of a single nationwide outbreak. Instead, investigators are examining several smaller clusters of cases while working to identify possible sources of contamination.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis can include prolonged watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. Symptoms may begin about a week after consuming contaminated food or water and can last for weeks if left untreated.
With millions of Americans expected to celebrate Independence Day with backyard barbecues and picnics, the CDC recommends taking extra precautions when preparing meals. Those include thoroughly washing fresh fruits and vegetables, washing hands before handling food, preventing cross-contamination, and keeping cold foods refrigerated until they are ready to be served.
Anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea or other symptoms after eating fresh produce should contact a healthcare provider. The illness can be diagnosed through laboratory testing and treated with prescription medication.
According to the CDC, the true number of cases is likely higher than reported because some people recover without seeking medical care or being tested.
The agency continues to work with state health departments and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate the cases and identify potential sources of contamination.
