SHREVEPORT, La. — As families across the ArkLaTex prepare for Fourth of July cookouts and holiday gatherings, federal health officials are urging people to practice safe food handling after a rise in cases of a foodborne parasitic illness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 145 people in 17 states have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis after becoming sick between May 1 and June 16. Louisiana is among the states reporting cases.
