WASHINGTON, Ark. -- As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, few places provide a more immersive look at the nation's early years than Historic Washington State Park in southwest Arkansas.

Founded around the time the young nation was approaching its 50th birthday, Washington grew into an important regional center and later served as the Confederate capital of Arkansas during the Civil War. After falling into disrepair, the town was preserved and transformed into a state park that today offers visitors a hands-on history lesson across 101 acres.
