SHREVEPORT, La. - Louisiana voters headed to the polls Saturday to select the major party nominees for the upcoming U.S. Senate race. Once the votes were counted, the fall match-up was set with Julia Letlow taking on Jamie Davis.
The primary runoff elections follow a shifting political landscape in the state under a new closed primary system. The system requires a runoff when no candidate captures more than 50 percent of the vote during the initial primary contest.
In the Republican primary runoff, U.S. Representative Julia Letlow beat State Treasurer John Fleming 57% to 43%. Letlow advances to the fall ballot to compete for the seat being vacated by two-term incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, who failed to advance past the May primary.
On the Democratic side, Jamie Davis beat Gary Crockett 80% to 20%.
The winners of Saturday night's runoff contests now move forward to the general election scheduled for November 3.
