SHREVEPORT, La. — As students across Louisiana head back to the classroom, Louisiana State Police is reminding motorists to exercise extra caution in school zones and around school buses. Trooper Eddie Thomas with LSP Troop G joined KTBS 3's Taylor Gibson on First News Friday to review some of the important safety measures in place.Â
State troopers and local law enforcement officers are increasing patrols near schools to enforce speed limits and traffic safety laws. Reduced speed limits are active during designated morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours. Drivers should pay close attention to posted signs and flashing warning beacons.
Louisiana law strictly prohibits the use of handheld wireless devices in posted school zones. Drivers may not make calls, text, or access social media while operating a vehicle in these designated areas. Violators face fines starting at $250.
Motorists must also yield to school crossing guards. Crossing guards hold the authority to direct traffic flow and stop vehicles to allow children to cross safely. Drivers should watch for young pedestrians walking or riding bicycles near school grounds.
State officials also emphasize school bus safety laws. Drivers traveling in either direction must stop at least 30 feet away from a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus retracts its stop arm and resumes movement. Passing a stopped school bus carries severe penalties, including heavy fines.
On divided highways with a physical median or raised barrier, oncoming traffic does not need to stop for a school bus. However, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must always stop.
Louisiana State Police encourages parents to review pedestrian safety rules with their children and allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes to prevent rushing.
