BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU and Hyundai Steel signed a Master Research Agreement today to support one of the largest industrial investments in the history of Louisiana.
The agreement establishes a single framework for sponsored research and jointly developed technology, allowing the partners to quickly advance projects across metallurgy, materials science, energy, robotics, automation, and environmental engineering. The partnership also lays the foundation for enhancing core technological capabilities and developing professional talent for the landmark North American facility belonging to Hyundai Steel in Ascension Parish, located about a half-hour drive from the main campus of LSU.
The 5.8 billion dollar steel mill is scheduled for completion in 2029 on a 1,800-acre site in the RiverPlex MegaPark. It will be one of the first fully integrated, Electric Arc Furnace-based steel plants of its kind, and it is expected to create about 1,300 jobs while supporting thousands of indirect jobs. The agreement complements the workforce training already underway through River Parishes Community College and the FastStart program of Louisiana Economic Development. It extends the investments of Hyundai Steel in Louisiana to graduate-level research while offering opportunities for internships and careers for top LSU talent.

The agreement pre-establishes key research and development provisions for collaborative work, including intellectual property, project structure, research publications, joint researcher and faculty mechanics, and protection of proprietary data and materials. With this foundation in place, individual projects across every academic discipline can launch without additional negotiations, generating a steady pipeline of applied research outcomes for global markets.
The agreement draws on capabilities across the entirety of the flagship LSU research enterprise, including the College of Engineering, College of Science, and Office of Research and Economic Development-managed research centers, institutes, and core facilities. Examples include the Louisiana Light Source—home of the only synchrotron in the South—and the multidisciplinary Advanced Microscopy and Analytical Core, which recently unveiled a 10 million dollar scanning transmission electron microscope. Meanwhile, the Energy Institute of LSU provides analysis of low-carbon technologies and energy economics.
The research partnership connects the research and graduate programs of LSU to the technician-level training pipeline already being established in the region, providing Hyundai Steel with access to talent and research facilities.

The Louisiana operations of Hyundai Steel will primarily produce steel for the U.S. vehicle manufacturing plants of Hyundai Motor Group, but the company plans to expand sales to other U.S. automakers.
"As materials researchers, we are excited to collaborate with Hyundai Steel to develop technologies that complement their Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) facility," said Chris Marvel, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at LSU. "The most exciting aspect of this research partnership is long-lasting, collaborative research opportunities for LSU students and faculty, alongside Hyundai Steel, to fortify manufacturing in Louisiana."
Proposed development areas include current and emerging challenges spanning the use, transport, and storage of clean energy; smart factory and robotic technologies; manufacturing process optimization; and the development of new engineered performance materials.Â
