The American Red Cross Louisiana Region is mobilizing disaster teams and urging residents to take immediate precautions as a slow-moving tropical storm could trigger severe, weeklong heavy rainfall and a life-threatening flash flooding threat across the state.
Repeated rounds of intense tropical rainfall are expected to impact communities from the Gulf Coast up through central and northern parts of the state, with some areas facing the potential for widespread urban and river flooding.
"When the skies darken, Louisiana’s neighbor-helping-neighbor spirit shines," said Karen McCoy, Executive Director of the American Red Cross North Louisiana Chapter. "Our incredible volunteers are already on the ground, preparing to open shelters if needed. We are encouraging everyone to pack your emergency go-kit, double-check your safety plans, and ensure you have a way to get safety alerts tonight so we can all weather this storm together."
FLOOD SAFETY STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOUSEHOLD
The Red Cross urges Louisiana residents to implement these immediate safety measures:
Download the Red Cross Emergency App: Search "American Red Cross" in app stores or visit redcross.org/apps to download the free Emergency App for real-time flood alerts, shelter locations, and step-by-step safety advice in English and Spanish. Visit RedCross.org/Apps
Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. If you encounter a flooded roadway while driving, turn around and find an alternate route. It takes only six inches of swift water to knock an adult off their feet, and just 12 inches to sweep away most vehicles.
Be Ready to Evacuate: Monitor local authorities closely and be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation is advised. Plan an alternate location on higher ground, such as a neighbor's or relative's home, where your family can safely shelter.
Prepare Your Property: Scan your surroundings for immediate risks, including weak or old trees and low-hanging power lines. Ensure all pets are brought indoors to a safe environment.
Pack a Go-Kit: Assemble a portable grab-and-go emergency kit containing a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food, essential prescription medications, medical supplies, a flashlight, and copies of important documents.
Check on Neighbors: Reach out to loved ones, the elderly, and neighbors who may require extra assistance preparing for severe weather.
In moments like these, it is the neighbors helping neighbors that will carry Louisiana through the storm. The American Red Cross relies on the kindness and dedication of people just like you to bring hope and comfort during a crisis. In fact, more than 90% of our workforce is made up of compassionate volunteers. Whether you choose to make a financial donation to ensure a family has a warm meal and a safe place to sleep, or you step up to join us as a volunteer, your support makes an immediate difference. Please visit redcross.org/louisiana to give, or to join our volunteer team and help us be there for our communities when they need it most.
