SHREVEPORT, La. — Community leaders, law enforcement officials, and residents gathered Friday at Riverview Park to launch a new effort focused on reducing violence and strengthening relationships across Caddo Parish neighborhoods.
The City of Shreveport Fair Share Initiative hosted the kickoff of the “Hoop Don’t Shoot – Because I Love My Neighborhood” campaign, bringing together city leaders, public safety agencies, community advocates, and youth supporters.
Organizers say the initiative is about more than basketball. It is designed to encourage mentorship, neighborhood pride, positive youth engagement, and stronger connections between residents and law enforcement.
Fair Share Director Leon Wheeler compared the community to a family, saying everyone has a role in looking out for one another.
“Well, you know, it's like a family reunion. You know, we're all living under one big roof couch report, and we all got to get along and know each other and be friends with each other and look out and watch each other back.”
The event included remarks from local leaders, including representatives from the City of Shreveport, Shreveport Police Department, Shreveport Fire Department, Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, and other community organizations.
Organizers recognized sponsors and partners supporting the effort, including Red River Bank, Bossman’s Barber College, and the Shreveport Parks and Recreation Department.
Officials say “Hoop Don’t Shoot” will continue with activities aimed at creating safe spaces, building trust, and providing positive opportunities for young people across the city.
