SHREVEPORT, La. — A new study ranks Louisiana's 10 most dangerous cities, and one city you might expect to see on the list is nowhere to be found. Despite its reputation, Shreveport did not crack the Top 10.
Bossier City is the only Northwest Louisiana city on the list, and it ranks 10th. The study, conducted by "97.3 The Dog," claims to use FBI statistics in major crime categories like homicide, rape, aggravated assault and more. But domestic violence data was missing, and that's Shreveport's most committed crime.
"When it comes to the FBI database, everything is generalized in nature. So what is considered a domestic abuse case here in Louisiana may be different in Texas or Arkansas, Mississippi. So those are typically categorized as assaults or batteries. And it doesn't necessarily differentiate between domestic violence types of calls," said Cpl. Chris Bordelon, public information officer for the Shreveport Police Department.
So far this year, SPD has made nearly 200 domestic violence arrests.
Bordelon said the city is on pace to surpass previous years, and domestic violence continues to be the root cause of much of the city's violent crime. More than 75% of Shreveport's homicides this year have been linked to domestic violence situations.
"And just about all of our major one crimes, what we have seen is a reduction in January, February, March and May of this year. This continued into June in both shootings and homicides. We've also continued to see declines in our residential and vehicle burglaries as well as vehicle theft," Bordelon said.
Bordelon said this marks the second year in a row Shreveport has avoided ranking among Louisiana's Top 10 most dangerous cities on a per-capita basis.
He also mentioned a separate study released last year by Securitas that also left Shreveport out of the state's Top 10.
When it comes to the top dangerous cities in the state, Marksville comes in at No. 1, Monroe ranks No. 2, and Alexandria makes No. 3. Opelousas came in at No. 4, and surprisingly, New Orleans is fifth on the list.
