SHREVEPORT, La. - Shreveport Little Theatre is premiering its 2026-2027 season, featuring historical musicals that take the audience back in time, while reflecting on our current world.
Its first production of the season is 'Cabaret,' a mainstay on Broadway. The musical focuses on the dwindling nightlife in Berlin as the Nazis rise to power.
"We thought that this was a fantastic way to not only, of course, entertain our audiences, but to also reignite that conversation about what happens when limitations are put so strictly on individuals," said Laura Beeman-Nugent, artistic director with SLT.
SLT's intimate setting offers a "perfect" setting for 'Cabaret,' according to actor Nathan Gay, who plays "Emcee."
"The show is very much about connecting with the audience," said Gay. "In the original production of the show, there was a big mirror at the top of the stage that reflected the audience the whole time. Being able to do it here at Shreveport Little Theatre is the perfect place to do [Cabaret] because I think we have a really great setup for that kind of intimate feel."
'Cabaret' is centered around the "Kit Kat Club," idolizing the freedom and expression of those within its walls. Amelia Osborn, who plays Fraulein Kost said the characters are attempting to "salvage" what they can.
"We do have our own lives that we're trying to salvage in this time that is really tumultuous for Germans," said Osborn. "Also, the Kit Kat Club is a great distraction for everyone that is dealing with this war."
Jessica Miller, who plays a Kit Kat Girl, shared a similar observation to Osborn.
"I am extremely gung ho about trying to maintain my freedom and my choices and being able to dance and sing the way that I want to," said Miller.
"Everyone [should] get their tickets because this is going to be a summer show never to forget," said Karyn Rimmer, who plays Fraulein Schneider in 'Cabaret.' "[The cast] is amazing, [the numbers] are amazing. Laura and Adam have done an incredible job building this story that really is multiple stories in one."
