SHREVEPORT, La. — The Shreveport Police Department officially opened its new Area 2 substation Wednesday, a facility leaders say will improve response times and serve as a central hub for neighborhood policing.
Located on St. Vincent Drive, the new building also serves as the launch point for the Police Athletic League. During the opening ceremony, members of Scouting America joined department leaders to celebrate a partnership focused on local outreach.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said the park-based location is ideal for the department's mission to connect with and mentor local youth.
"I cannot think of a better or more ideal location than here within this park," Smith said. "Because we strive to become better mentors to young people, to try to help them become the best that they can be. And in addition to that, there's a Sportran hub right here in this park where anyone can just hop on the bus and ride here for free."
The St. Vincent Drive facility is the third new substation the department has opened in the last two years. Other permanent locations include North Market Street and Monkhouse Drive.
With the addition of a leased space on Kingston Road in south Shreveport, the department now maintains a substation in every quadrant of the city. Officials said the expansion is part of a broader effort to build a safer and stronger Shreveport.
