SHREVEPORT, La. — Shreveport Police demonstrated a new "drone-as-first-responder" system to the City Council’s Public Safety Committee following a successful two-week pilot program.
During the trial, two drones completed 127 flights, arriving at dispatched calls before police officers 74% of the time. Officials say the technology drastically improves response times, provides crucial real-time intelligence, and helps determine if a physical police presence is even necessary.
"There are some significant factors that have to go along with that. It is not just the unit itself," said Capt. Dean Willis.
The primary hurdle remains staffing, as personnel are needed to constantly monitor the system and launch drones immediately upon incoming emergency calls.
Committee members also explored expanding the versatile technology for fire responses, code enforcement, and other municipal operations. Equipped with live video and thermal imaging capabilities, the drones can also securely store footage for evidence.
While no funding decisions were finalized during the meeting, next steps will focus on determining required equipment quantities, optimal docking station locations, and permanent staffing and funding solutions.
