SHREVEPORT, La. — August is Sports and Orthopedic Medicine Awareness Month, and local experts are encouraging athletes and active adults to pay close attention to injuries as fall sports seasons get underway.

Dr. Ben Feibel with the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic says this time of year typically brings an increase in sports-related injuries as athletes return to practices and competition.

“We see those as everyone kind of gets back in the groove of sports,” Feibel said. “It’s hard to practice the way that you train, and so we’re seeing more and more.”

While serious injuries such as ACL tears can occur, Feibel noted that many sports injuries can be successfully treated with rest, ice, time, and physical therapy before surgery is considered. He encourages athletes and parents to monitor injuries closely and seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve.

Feibel, who specializes in hip and knee replacements, says his goal is to help patients regain their quality of life and return to the activities they enjoy as quickly and safely as possible.
