Star power: Satellites in space boost connectivity across Louisiana

Consequently, Louisiana has led the nation in meeting and exceeding its established milestones, according to ConnectLA.

Although the federal grant program has been a lengthy process since beginning in 2021, recent final federal approvals have cleared the way for progress. Across Louisiana, workers are constructing broadband infrastructure, completing contracts and connecting residents to the resources powered by high-speed internet.

Louisiana recently finalized a contract with SpaceX, the company behind Starlink satellite technology. While options for low-Earth orbit satellite internet continue to expand, Starlink has provided connectivity to remote areas where laying traditional fiber optics proves difficult, the company said.

ConnectLA said rural communities across Louisiana stand to gain from the satellite services due to challenging terrain and unique connectivity demands. The agreement covers more than 10,635 locations across 50 parishes.

When announcing the agreement, Gov. Jeff Landry noted that Louisiana is already familiar with the technology, as satellite internet has provided critical support during emergency situations such as hurricanes.

“Louisiana’s partnership with SpaceX allows communities to look forward to better opportunities that come with dependable, high-speed internet access,” said Landry. “Starlink has helped our state during times of disaster, and we are grateful that the BEAD program will allow thousands to benefit from this technology. We are proud to continue the work and move toward universal coverage, ensuring every resident has the connectivity needed to succeed in today’s economy.”
