BATON ROUGE, La. – As Louisiana families get ready to celebrate Independence Day and America's 250th year, the Office of State Fire Marshal is reminding residents to prioritize safety and handle fireworks with care.
Fireworks continue to be a primary source of avoidable injuries during the holiday season each year. Sparklers alone can exceed temperatures of 2,000 degrees, posing a severe risk for burns, particularly among children.
Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that fireworks misuse and malfunctions were tied to a minimum of 15 fatalities and roughly 13,000 emergency room injuries. Sparklers caused about 1,300 of those injuries. Individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 suffered injuries most frequently, with burns to the hands, fingers, and head ranking as the most frequent issues.
Over 660 authorized fireworks stands are set to open across the state this season, and retail sales are permitted until 11:59 p.m. July 5. State law mandates that all fireworks sellers hold a license and permit from the fire marshal and operate only in areas where fireworks are legally allowed.
"Public fireworks displays remain the safest way to celebrate," said state Fire Marshal Bryan J. Adams. "If you choose to use consumer fireworks at home, plan ahead, follow safety guidelines and buy only from licensed vendors."
The Office of State Fire Marshal advises the following steps to avoid injuries:
Use fireworks in open spaces at least 200 feet away from structures, vehicles, and flammable objects
Keep fireworks away from children and opt for safer choices like glow sticks or public shows instead
Avoid homemade, modified, or illegal fireworks, and always follow the directions on the label
Avoid handling fireworks if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Ignite just one firework at a time and ensure a water hose or bucket is close by
Drench used fireworks prior to throwing them away, and never put dry fireworks directly into a garbage can
Verify whether local burn bans are in effect and skip the fireworks if conditions are dry or windy
