NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Voters are heading to the polls for the Republican primary runoff elections, with a high-stakes U.S. Senate race and an attorney general contest hanging in the balance.
Stephen F. Austin State University political science professor Steve Galatas joined KTBS 3 news to provide analysis on the tightening U.S. Senate race between incumbent John Cornyn and Ken Paxton. According to Galatas, voter turnout will be the deciding factor as polls show the candidates are separated by thin margins.
Paxton enters the night with momentum following an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Galatas noted that Texas voters are already familiar with the weight a Trump endorsement carries in a Senate race. Paxton’s campaign has focused on a message of change and loyalty to the president.
Meanwhile, Cornyn is leaning on his record of consistency and his own credentials as a supporter of Trump. Cornyn led the initial primary round but failed to secure the majority required to avoid a runoff
