A U.S. General Services Administration lease for a Southfield office being used by the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, ICE’s legal wing, has drawn protest and criticism from the surrounding community since plans were first reported in February. At a panel hosted on Wednesday night, community organizers gathered to emphasize the importance of neighborhood solidarity in the face of ICE activity in the region.

Lauren Fink, who, along with her husband Cameron, started the Southfield Neighbors Action Committee in response to the news of the Southfield office, told the crowd that, following news that a proposed detention facility in Romulus would be sold by ICE, resistance to the agency’s presence in Southfield remains important — and the win in Romulus shows that they can be pushed out.
