Cybele Raver, Vanderbilt University’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, will serve as the next president of the University of Michigan, the university’s Board of Regents announced Tuesday morning.
Raver is recognized as a national leader in higher education with a strategic mind for university administration, the university said in a news release. U-M also said Raver was “instrumental in strengthening all aspects” of Vanderbilt’s “research and academic enterprise.”
Raver’s accomplishments include helping Vanderbilt surpass $1 billion in annual research expenditures and the launch of Vanderbilt’sCollege of Connected Computing, the university’s first new college in over 40 years. Raver alsoexpanded Vanderbilt’s academic footprintto New York City, San Francisco, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and West Palm Beach, Florida.
“Dr. Raver has a proven record of building strong teams, expanding research excellence, and strengthening every institution she has served,” Michael Behm, chair of the U-M Board of Regents, said in a statement. “She understands what it takes to lead a complex, world-class university — and she shares our unwavering belief that Michigan has been, is now, and must remain the best university in the country. We are confident she is the right leader for this moment and we look forward to the board’s formal vote.”
The U-M Board of Regents has scheduled a special meeting at 11 a.m. on Sept. 1 to take a formal vote on Raver’s appointment. If approved, Raver’s term with U-M will begin on Dec. 1.
Raver said in a statement that it was an “extraordinary honor” to be the next leader of U-M “at this pivotal moment in higher education.”
“Michigan’s scale and impact across research, education, economic growth, and public service are unmatched and I’m eager to build on its remarkable legacy,” Raver said. “I look forward to working alongside faculty, staff, students and alumni to lead Michigan forward with clarity and confidence.”
Current U-M President Domenico Grasso will lead the university until Nov. 30 and will assist with Raver’s transition into the role of president.
