Butte Fourth of July parade celebrates America's 250th

From the fireworks show the night before, to the red, white, and blue march down Harrison Avenue at 10 a.m. the day of, few places pull off the Independence Day festivities quite like Butte, whose annual celebration has roots as far back as 1876.

It only seems to get grander with each passing year, the 144 floats in the 2026 parade marking the most ever.

Leading the lineup as grand marshal was Mike Lawson, a Marine veteran who has dedicated his life to service in Butte. That includes his work as the local Toys for Tots campaign coordinator, bringing joy to thousands of kids in need every Christmas.

"When we see people benefit from what we're doing, we know we're doing the right thing," Lawson said. "Helping the poor, the underprivileged, the needy, the veterans--the need is there, and I'm just glad we can address some of it."

For Lawson, Butte's Fourth of July parade means more than most, not only as a veteran, but also as a lifelong Butte resident, who has been involved in the annual parade ever since his childhood.

"We grew up at the Columbia Gardens, so we were on the fire engine, all the kids up there in the '50s," Lawson said. "We've pulled this Toys for Tots float for the last 10 years, probably. So, being part of it is an honor."

"Butte is such a wonderful place," Lawson continued. "Our population doubles for people to come and watch the parade. It's because we're Butte, America. We have a great history. It's a Butte spirit. We're Butte tough."

Other summer spectacles on the schedule for Butte this July include the annual Montana Folk Festival next weekend (July 10-12) and the Butte 100 mountain bike race (Saturday, July 18).
