WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. House passed H.R. 7250, a bill that would keep authorization in place for the Fort Peck Reservation Rural Water System through 2028.
According to a press release, the extension would allow water infrastructure work to continue in northeastern Montana, including on the Fort Peck Reservation and in Roosevelt, Sheridan, Valley and Daniels counties.
The Fort Peck Reservation Rural Water System dates back to a 2000 law that set up two connected systems in Montana: the Assiniboine and Sioux Rural Water System and the Dry Prairie Water System. Together, they served tribal and non-tribal communities across the region.Â
The bill also extended the Bureau of Reclamation’s authority for the project from December 2026 to December 2028.
House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman backed the bill and said it would help protect dependable water service for families, farmers and businesses in northeastern Montana.
“Where reliable water flows, opportunity and prosperity follow," said Westerman.Â
