Montana’s legislative races have become multi-million-dollar dogfights, a staggering departure from a time when those campaigns lived comfortably on $10,000.

The bulk of spending this election cycle isn’t coming from candidates; it’s coming through political action committees, a mix of dark money groups and others with ties to out-of-state donors that pay to influence races all over the country. And while it’s not the first time PACs have entered the fray in Montana politics, many political veterans say this year’s activities seem to be at a scale that the state hasn’t seen before.
