The University of Montana’s Washington-Grizzly stadium hosted its third consecutive year of summer concerts, with ticket sales for the two headliners this year totaling more than $6 million.
Post Malone and Jelly Roll sold about 18,000 tickets for their July 21 show, earning about $4 million. About 16,000 concertgoers bought tickets for Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean’s concert Aug. 1 earning more than $2 million.
Last summer, Shania Twain sold about 17,000 tickets, bringing in under $2 million as the only performer in 2025.
That’s according to spokesperson for UM Dave Kuntz, who said the reason revenues are approximate values is “because there are differences with each show that make it apples-to-oranges to compare.”
“Ultimately, it is an exercise in supply and demand, the more popular the show, the higher price point per ticket,” Kuntz said. “But in total, each show has sold at near stadium capacity for concerts.”
Ticketing revenues go toward the artist and the promoters, Logjam Presents and Live Nation, but the university keeps ancillary revenues like concessions and parking, Kuntz said.
The Missoulian requested figures on UM's share of the revenue and Kuntz said the university is working to prepare the numbers.
UM partners with Logjam and Live Nation each year to select artists who can sell out the stadium and fit the demand in western Montana, he said.
“We are always looking to have a variety of artists to help increase the volume of total people who visit our campus to attend a show,” Kuntz said.
A jury in April found Live Nation liable for operating as a monopoly in overcharging ticket buyers.
The summer concert series in 2024, which kicked off the now annual performances, featured headlining artists Pink, Tyler Childers and Pearl Jam who collectively sold a total of 72,000 tickets over three shows in the course of a week, the Missoulian previously reported.
The concerts in 2024 were supposed to serve as a welcome back to campus for students, though this year’s concerts were held weeks before students are slated to start classes on Aug. 24.
The process to select next year’s performers is already underway, he said, as it has become a “full-year exercise” at the university to find artists suitable for shows at the stadium or the Adams Center.
“This is an institutional priority to use these world-class facilities at a higher rate of use,” Kuntz said. “We believe this is good for the university, good for Missoula, and good for Montana.”
University President Jeremiah Shinn, who started in his new role at UM last month, attended the Bryan and Aldean show, Kuntz said.
In a statement, Shinn said UM brings people together as a “community anchor.”
“We proudly serve our state by hosting these large-scale events that generate significant economic and commerce opportunities for our local businesses across the Missoula area,” he said.
