CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Montana saw far fewer fentanyl pill seizures than the rest of the Rocky Mountain region in 2026, according to new numbers released by the DEA.
A news release from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Rocky Mountain Field Division said agents in Montana seized 14,529 fentanyl pills and 0.77 kilograms of fentanyl powder since January 1, 2026. The same release said the four-state division as a whole accounted for nearly 3.2 million pills and 92.5 kilograms of powder.Â
Those Montana totals were well below the neighboring states listed in the report. Colorado had 2,554,889 pills seized and Utah had 613,619, while Wyoming reported 5,507.
The report said the Rocky Mountain division covers Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. It also said the region made up about one out of every six fentanyl pills seized nationwide so far this year.
David Olesky, the division’s special agent in charge, said the agency used the midpoint of 2026 to look at how fentanyl enforcement was playing out across the region.
"Our division continues to seize an abundance of fentanyl pills disproportionally higher than the amounts seized in other parts of the country. While fentanyl powder is both prevalent and being seized in larger quantities across the U.S. the I-25 and I-70 corridors are building a reputation as fentanyl pill super highways," said Olesky.
The release said Montana’s 2026 total was lower than the state’s 24,000 pills seized in 2025 and 72,600 seized in 2024.
The release said RMFD seizures in 2026 represent potentially millions of fatal doses. It said just two milligrams of fentanyl is considered a lethal dose, an amount that can fit on the tip of a pencil or the equivalent of several granules of salt.
Nationally, the DEA said it had seized 18.7 million pills and 7,903 pounds of fentanyl powder to date in 2026. In 2025, the agency reported seizing about 47 million pills across the country.
