Seattle, Wash. — A Montana National Guard support team has been in Seattle for nearly a month to help with public safety tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The city is one of the tournament's host sites, and the Montana National Guard's 83rd Support Team is there to provide added support alongside local and federal agencies.
Commander Adam Karlin confirmed the team is in Seattle to provide civil support and hazmat support. He said soldiers have radiation and atmospheric monitoring equipment in and around the stadium to help detect changes and elevated readings of any kind.
That monitoring happens before, during and after matches, and the work took a large effort from the people involved.
Leading into how the mission felt on the ground, Karlin shared his view.
"The experience has been really great. We have excellent relationships with our partners and CSTs in the region and those across the country," said Adam Karlin.
Training NCO Jarrod Plant said the assignment also gave the team a chance to learn how agencies operate during major events.
"Seems like a pretty great responsibility, but also as a great learning opportunity for us to see how different agencies operate on these larger scales," said Jarrod Plant.
Karlin also explained that missions like this strengthen preparedness nationally and in Montana by building relationships with local and federal partners.
He said that work also helps show how the National Guard fit into the broader response during large-scale events.
