Missoula, Mont. — Montana health officials are asking residents 55 and older to take part in a statewide survey about how seniors feel about their communities.
The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services said the anonymous survey will help gather feedback from older adults across the state.
Lisa Sheppard, CEO of Missoula Aging Services, said the survey will guide local groups and bring older adults into broader community decisions.
“We can not only use it to create our own plans, but we can share it widely with our local communities. It's a way for older adults to also have their voices represented in all of the local planning and development efforts that are happening,” Sheppard said.
In Missoula, resident Terry Egan said she loves her community but that her survey response will reflect a desire for more ease of access to information.
“It just would be good to have more of a way to learn about all the kinds of things that are going on in our community. How do you get the information to the people, to myself, when I need it the most?” Egan said.
State officials said the community assessment survey takes place every four years as required by the federal Older Americans Act. They said the results are meant to give the state's nine area aging agencies specific information they can use to respond to local needs.
“It gives us really good solid data on where we are as a state. You know, what is it that people are really needing? What is their experience of aging? It looks at things like finances, employment, community design and accessibility,” Sheppard said.
The survey can be found on the DPHHS website, where it can be taken until July 10. If you want to take it on paper, reach out to your local aging service as soon as possible so it gets mailed by the July 3 deadline.
