Black Eagle Dam work in Great Falls nears completion by mid-September Great Falls, Mont.
— Repairs and upgrades at Black Eagle Dam in Great Falls were expected to wrap up by mid-September after two years of work on the historic site
. The dam provided more than 20 megawatts to the energy grid and was managed by NorthWestern Energy [https://www.northwesternenergy.com]. Crews had been installing new support structures and spillway components as part of the project.
The work focused on keeping the dam strong for years to come as it neared a major milestone. "The Purpose Of The Project Is To Strengthen The Long-Term Integrity Of Black Eagle Dam As It Approaches Its 100th Year Of Service," Jodee Black said.
Summer heat had made the smell from the Missouri River stronger in the area. To protect workers, crews lowered the water level, which exposed wide stretches of mud and silt that are usually underwater.
That change also created risks for people and pets near the river.
"The Exposed Riverbed Can Also Present Significant Safety Risks To People And Pets, Making It Important To Stay Out Of The Area," Black said. Warning signs were posted along the River's Edge Trail [https://greatfallsmt.gov/59
