MISSOULA, Mont. – A hiker was safely found in the McCormick Peak area by Missoula County Sheriff’s Office deputies early Monday morning on July 27.

The male hiker hadn’t returned after the start of his hike on the morning of July 25 from the McCormick Trailhead to summit McCormick Peak.

The search included ground crews made up of highly trained volunteers in Missoula County Search and Rescue (MSSAR), Missoula County Sheriff’s Office deputies and drones. The BItterroot Search Dogs, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, and Two Bear Air offered additional assistance.

Search operations began at 6:00 a.m. on July 26, due to the safety concerns of traversing rugged terrain in darkness. The search went until 8:00 p.m.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, the hiker called for help and provided GPS coordinates. Missoula County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the location, safely contacted the hiker, and escorted him back to the safety of the residence he stayed at, after reaching the trailhead.

The hiker did not have any injuries, and was able to hike out without assistance from deputies.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office reminded hikers and recreationists to be prepared. They should always tell someone planned routes and the expected return times. Proper hiking gear appropriate for the terrain and conditions, water, and other essentials should be packed along. Multiple layers of clothing should be packed as well, with the possibility of rapidly changing weather conditions.
