Alberton, Mont. — As July approaches and more people head to Montana waterways, river guides in western Montana say summer fun on the water should start with safety.
A NonStop Local crew went to the Monsanto River near Alberton as Isaiah Ruiz got in a raft to show how he enjoys the water while trying to stay safe ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.
Outdoor activities like rafting, floating, paddle boarding and swimming remain a big part of summer life across western Montana. In Missoula, guides said rivers also serve as places where people come together.
“Getting out on the river, the river especially, especially in Missoula, but all over western Montana, you know, the rivers are kind of the heart and soul of our communities. You know, Missoula is a valley where three rivers, you know, meet. And not only do the rivers meet, but people meet. It's always been a gathering place,” said Everett Johnston, part owner of Montana River Guides.
Johnston also shared the basics people should keep in mind before launching.
“Don't drink alcohol while you're out on the water. Make sure you guys are wearing life jackets, helmets you have a throw bag on your boat. Run the river together in groups of at least two boats,” he said.
Guides said checking weather and water conditions is another key step before getting on the river, especially after recent rain raised water levels.
“Definitely look at the river flows with how much weather and rain we've had lately, the water has come up significantly. So check in with a local raft company, a fishing outfit, or just look online at the level of the water and make sure it's within your realm of possibilities summer doesn't feel like summer in Montana if you can't get on the water,” said Amy Braig, lead raft guide at Montana River Guide.
With some sun breaking through, Ruiz said it looked like a good time to keep rafting.
