White Sulphur Springs, Mont. — Firefighters continue working to contain the Ant Park fire as it remains at about 400 acres near the headwaters of the North Fork of the Smith River, northeast of White Sulphur Springs.
Crews are focused on putting out spot fires and reinforcing containment lines as warmer and drier weather was expected to increase fire activity. Nearly 150 personnel are on scene, and forest road closures remain in effect to protect public safety and give firefighters access to the area.
Seven miles east, Showdown Montana stepped in to support the response by serving three meals a day to firefighters.
Organizers work through breakfast, packed lunches and dinner service on Wednesday evening to feed more than 200 firefighters. The effort also included preparing the ski lodge to house crews.
“This is my home and these guys are here to protect us and take care of us and it’s our job to do our best to take care of them,” said Katie Boedecker, Showdown Montana owner.
Boedecker starts her day at 3:00 a.m. Other organizers arrive between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. to cook hot meals and get the lodge ready.
“These guys are coming from all over the United States. We got people from California, Tennessee, Alaska and they’re away from their homes and we want them to feel loved and cared for because we appreciate them,” said Boedecker.
Agency officials said those meals are important for crews working the Ant Park fire.
“The firefighters when they’re out on the line are doing a lot of hard work. They need to get their calories in. So, it’s really important to get some good food in them,” said David Green, Northern Rockies Incident Management Team PIO 3 trainee.
Showdown Montana ask people who want to help to bring water, Gatorade, healthy snacks, feminine hygiene products, shaving products, socks and T-shirts to Showdown Montana or the Edith Hotel in White Sulphur Springs.
