(The Center Square) — New Jersey Democrats are moving ahead with a plan to authorize the state government to set new taxes on privately run ICE facilities operating in the state, but the proposal is drawing criticism from republicans who say it would "destroy" the state's prison system.

The measure, which is poised for a vote in the State Assembly, calls for imposing a 8% tax on correctional services contracts and creates a 3% correctional services business surtax on top of the state’s corporate business tax. Privately run prisons would also be required to pay a $ 15-per-inmate-per-day fee to the state under the proposal.
