As triple-digit temperatures and heat advisories continue to appear across Oregon, some state prisons and the incarcerated Oregonians they house are going without a key tool to beat the heat: central air conditioning.

The Oregon State Penitentiary, Santiam Correctional Institution, Oregon State Correctional Institution and Coffee Creek Correctional Facility all lack the infrastructure for such a cooling mechanism, leaving them with a patchwork of approaches from fans to swamp coolers to cool down. A recent audit of the Oregon Department of Corrections found that the Salem-based Oregon State Penitentiary, for instance, has reached interior temperatures above 90 degrees.
