WASHINGTON, D.C. - There are tariff-related tensions between the United States and its neighbor to the north.Â
Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney said, "In short, they asked too much and offered too little. In recent days the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair and undermined the net benefits for Canada and called into question the reliability of any deal."
Although both sides issued optimistic statements about coming to a deal before this weekend's deadline, things fell apart late Friday.Â
"We don't have new talks planned with the Canadians. We're moving forward with measures that respond to Canadian retaliation," said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Carney says Canada will match Washington D.C.'s tariffs dollar for dollar in sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, and electronics set to take effect on September 8th.Â
"As President Trump has introduced a trade policy to restore American production and protect American jobs, two countries have retaliated against the United States, the People's Republic of China and Canada," said Greer.
As or now, Canada doesn't plan to back down to the Trump White House.Â
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said, "It will be painful but we have a strong, vibrant, diversified economy. We're diversifying around the world and I think the job numbers speak for itself."
