A fiber optic cable manufacturing plant in Jackson says it will create 100 new jobs as part of a $100 million expansion, company and state officials announced Wednesday.
Prysmian, an Italian company with more than 50 locations in North America, opened in Jackson in 2018 afteracquiring General Cable.
This marks Prysmian’s second expansion in Jackson.
The company spent$30 millionto retool the Jackson plant to produce fiber optic cable instead of traditional copper cable in 2022 after the Biden-Harris administrationreleased its Internet for All initiative, which required materials used for federally funded infrastructure products to be made in the United States. Tennessee awarded the company a$105,000 grantas incentive to create 35 jobs.
Prysmian stated at the time that the company retrained employees to use the new equipment, allowing them to retain “nearly their entire workforce.”
The company will hold a groundbreaking celebration for the expansion — which is expected to double the plant’s size — on Oct. 15. Construction will be complete in about 20 months, according to Prysmian’s estimates.
Tennessee’s Department of Economic and Community Development has not yet released information about state incentives for the expansion.
“One of the greatest measures of a community’s success is when existing companies continue to invest and grow where they are,” Madison County Mayor AJ Massey said in a news release. “Prysmian’s expansion is a testament to the quality of our workforce and the collaborative approach we’ve taken to support industry in Madison County.”
Jackson Mayor Scott Conger said the global manufacturer’s decision to expand in Jackson “speaks volumes about the direction of our city.”
