BRENHAM — The Washington County Commissioners Court unanimously voted on Tuesday to propose an increased property tax rate for the 2026 tax year, setting off a formal process to raise additional revenue for county operations.
Under the proposal read into the court record, the new budget will generate significantly more revenue from property taxes than the previous year's budget. County officials announced that the budget will raise $3,792,665 more in total property tax revenue, marking an 11% increase over last year's figure. Of that overall growth, $744,670 will be collected from new properties added to the local tax roll this year.
The court officially proposed setting the 2026 property tax rate at 0.4367 per $100 of taxable valuation. For context during the deliberation, officials noted the benchmark calculation metrics required by state law. The county’s no-new-revenue tax rate, the rate required to raise the exact same amount of revenue from the same properties as the prior year, was calculated at 0.376594 per $100 valuation. Meanwhile, the voter-approved tax rate limit before triggering an election was calculated at 0.459710 per $100 valuation.
Following a formal motion and second on the floor, the commissioners held a record vote. Every commissioner voted in favor, approving the proposed 0.4367 rate unanimously.
