YOAKUM – Goliad opened its cross country season with a pair of top-three team finishes on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Bulldog Cross Country Invitational.
The Goliad varsity girls scored 71 points to finish third behind Victoria St. Joseph and Bellville, which each scored 65. Goliad’s five scoring runners combined for a time of 52 minutes, 8.19 seconds and averaged 10:25.64 over the 2,400-meter course.
Cassidy Meyer led Goliad with a third-place individual finish in 9:42.59.
Katalina Livas gave the Tigerettes two runners in the top 10, placing ninth in 10:06.09. Jaycee Henderson finished 16th in 10:20.61, Helen Cowan was 23rd in 10:48.54 and Taryn Franke rounded out Goliad’s scoring five in 33rd at 11:10.36.
Avery Machacek finished 56th in 12:24.23, Stella Grimes was 59th in 12:34.04 and Lillian Monzingo placed 60th in 12:34.41. Braelyn Konvicka finished in 15:54.72.
Niemeyer leads varsity boys
Austin Niemeyer turned in Goliad’s top performance in the varsity boys 3,600-meter race, placing 11th in 13:36.46.
Wyatt Ball finished 25th in 14:42.71, Brian Dougherty was 47th in 17:01.35 and Kasen McIntosh placed 49th in 17:18.88.
With four runners, Goliad did not record a varsity boys team score. Lockhart won the team championship with 20 points, followed by Yoakum with 66 and Victoria St. Joseph with 93.
GMS boys takes second
In the junior high school division, Goliad Middle School’s boys scored 38 points to finish second behind Shiner St. Paul, which won with 20.
The Cubs’ five scoring runners combined for a time of 53:30.86 and averaged 10:42.18 over 2,400 meters.
Ayden Villegas led GMS by placing fourth overall in 8:56.42.
Luke Taylor was 11th in 10:29.80, Yosiah Lazaro finished 16th in 10:56.06 and Jonah Maciel placed 20th in 11:11.80. Cash Meyer completed the Cubs’ scoring five with a 27th-place finish in 11:56.78.
Gunner Brandes finished 31st in 12:28.34.
Hawkins paces GMS girls
Abbey Hawkins led GMS in the girls 2,400-meter race with a seventh-place finish in 10:58.49.
McKenna Konvicka placed 29th in 12:45.49, while Olivia Ball finished 42nd in 14:33.90.
GMS did not have enough runners to record a team score. St. Paul won the division with 18 points, and Hallettsville Sacred Heart finished second with 44.
