LONE GROVE, Okla. (KTEN) - “A big thing we took away from last year is that we can’t beat ourselves. That’s the number one thing. When we stop beating ourselves, we can be a pretty good football program. That’s the thing leading forward here and that’s the thing with these guys with what we’re starting to progress on and really get ahead of is once we start doing things right and taking care of business, the sky is the limit.”
The Longhorns went 6-5 last season, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Kingfisher. The last time Lone Grove won a playoff was back in 2015. It’s safe to say making the playoffs is no longer the goal, Lone Grove wants to go far.
“Definitely a playoff run for sure. We’ve made it to the playoffs every year but honestly a playoff win is more about it, and then taking it all the way to state.”
“I think every team’s goal is the same and it’s kind of like you set it up to start it off by getting a good start in district and win the district and hopefully make a playoff run and everyone is chasing that gold ball.”
If Lone Grove is going to go on a run to Edmond to play for a state title, the run will look different with district realignment shaking things up. The Horns stay with Seminole and Sulphur, but will meet fellow Texoma foes Kingston, Madill, and Pauls Valley. It’s realignment the Longhorns say was much needed.
“District realignment is way better than driving to Tulsa for us, I know that us and Sulphur kind of got put in that deal and we were travelling I want to say about two and a half hours for every game so I know our fans and our kids are more excited to stay here locally.”
“That’s going to be big for us I think this year. I think in years past whenever we’ve had to make those long road trips it has been hard for us to stay focused all the way up there. Then just getting there is kind of like jet lag but on a bus really but I think a closer schedule will help us this year.”
Lone Grove opens their season August 28th against Plainview.
