Travelers counting on a cheaper vacation this fall may be in for a surprise. Shoulder season has traditionally brought lower prices, but some of those bargains are getting harder to find this year.
Waiting until fall doesn't guarantee a bargain this year. Expedia’s 2026 Fall Travel Outlook found lodging prices among the 10 most popular U.S. destinations are averaging 20% more than during summer, while airfare is up 2%.
“Shoulder season is not a given this year, but value is still out there if travelers know where to look,” said Melanie Fish, head of public relations for Expedia Group Brands.
And Americans don't appear ready to put their suitcases away just because summer is ending.
According to Airbnb's 2026 fall travel report, 60% of U.S. adults surveyed said they plan to take a weekend getaway this fall. Airbnb's booking data also showed that more weekend trips took place in the fall than in any other season in 2025.
For travelers watching their budgets, that means simply waiting until September or October may not be enough to score a deal.
According to Expedia, six destinations stand out for lower prices this fall, with the combined cost of airfare and lodging averaging about 25% less than during summer.
Aspen, Colorado
Aspen offers the biggest potential savings in Expedia's fall report, with the combined cost of airfare and lodging about 45% lower than summer.
Fall also brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and mountain scenery before the busy winter ski season arrives. For budget travelers, it's a good reminder not to automatically rule out destinations with reputations for being expensive. Timing can make a big difference.
Anchorage, Alaska
Anchorage isn't far behind, with combined airfare and lodging costs about 40% lower than summer.
Alaska's peak tourism season coincides with its long summer days, while fall brings cooler temperatures, changing foliage and fewer peak-season visitors.
“Expedia’s latest data shows that the biggest fall savings are showing up in a small set of destinations where travelers can choose between beachy, summer-like escapes and mountain getaways with a more classic autumn feel,” Fish said.
Fort Walton Beach, Florida
For travelers not quite ready to give up summer, Fort Walton Beach offers one of the better deals. Expedia found combined airfare and lodging prices are about 30% lower than summer.
Other destinations offering savings include San Diego at about 15%, Honolulu at about 10%, and Bozeman, Montana, at about 5%.
How to Save on Fall Travel
With fall bargains harder to find, flexibility can pay off. Instead of choosing a destination first, travelers can start with the deals. Expedia's Flight Deals tool highlights fares that are at least 20% lower than typical predicted prices.
It also helps to track airfare and compare package prices before booking. Expedia members can set price alerts for select routes, and the company says travelers can save an average of hundreds of dollars by booking a flight and hotel together, though savings vary by trip.
Don't overlook smaller destinations, either. Airbnb found that 90% of Gen Z respondents surveyed are interested in small towns and under-the-radar destinations for fall travel.
Finally, consider being flexible with both dates and trip length. Comparing several weekends can uncover lower rates, while a two- or three-night getaway can keep lodging, dining, and activity costs down.
The fall deals are still out there, but travelers may have to look beyond their first-choice destination or travel dates to find them.
