After two deaths this year at an immigration detention center at the Miami Correctional Facility in north-central Indiana, I blasted the local press for not going deep enough.

In my April 2026 column, I criticized reporters for their coverage, which did little to shed light on the lives of the two detainees, Lorth Sim and Tuan Van Bui, held in custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The stories, I noted, lacked insight and reaction from family members or Indianapolis’ Vietnamese and Cambodian communities.
