OKLAHOMA CITY – Gentner Drummond said he will release copies of his financial and health records to the public after being challenged to do so by a debate moderator.
The Republican gubernatorial candidate, who serves as Oklahoma’s attorney general, also told Oklahoma Voice during an interview Thursday that he plans to go a step further and also release results of a drug test.
The 62-year-old Hominy resident said he felt the drug test is important because it illustrates if he was on any medications.
Drummond said he is not “suggesting one way or the other” if his opponent Mike Mazzei is physically able to perform the job.
“The results will be available in three days and we’ll publish those and we’ll see if the other candidate feels confident enough in his physical stature to do that,” Drummond said.
The two men are facing off in an increasingly contentious race to secure Republican gubernatorial nomination during Oklahoma’s Aug. 25 runoff election.
The candidates were asked during a recent television debate if they would release their financial and health records, Drummond said.
Mazzei, 61, who is a financial planner, said he wouldn’t discuss releasing his financial and medical records when asked by Oklahoma Voice during an interview on Thursday.
“I’m not going to get into something like that,” Mazzei said.
Mazzei said his opponent’s campaign is suggesting that he is unfit to be governor and is “probably on some unhelpful medication.”
Mazzei, of Tulsa, said he has not been on any medication since the car accident in 2008.
“I am not on any pain medication now,” Mazzei said.
But he accused Drummond of using his 2008 car accident in which Mazzei sustained nerve damage to his back as “political ammunition.”
“I have been surprised and disappointed that Drummond and his team would stoop to that low,” Mazzei said.
Mazzei’s car accident resulted in significant missed votes in the Senate, where he began serving in 2004.
He was elected again for a second term without opposition and reelected for a third term before facing term limits in 2016.
“I’m just grateful that the Lord helped me get my abilities back,” Mazzei said. “I’m fit as a fiddle and I’m a pretty lucky guy to be a candidate for governor.”
Drummond and Mazzei were the top vote getters in the June 16 primary that featured nine Republicans.
Drummond secured 26.25% of the vote while Mazzei landed 25.97%.
