Two of the three gubernatorial candidates vying to succeed Gov. Janet Mills this November agree on the major challenges Maine schools are facing: students are falling behind in reading and math, mental health needs are growing, educators are underpaid and stretched thin, and school buildings are aging without enough resources to replace them.

Democratic Hannah Pingree and independent Rick Bennett don’t diverge much over how the next governor should address those challenges either.
