Matt Dunlap is getting a boost from national Democrats, indicating they think Maine’s 2nd Congressional District race remains close.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced Thursday that Dunlap has been added to its “Red to Blue” program, which provides candidates with strategic guidance, staff resources, training, and fundraising support.
“Matt Dunlap has spent his career delivering for Maine’s working families and standing up to special interests — earning the trust of Mainers across party lines,” said DCCC Chair U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene. “He’s the independent, Maine-first leader the Second District needs to lower costs, protect affordable health care, and stand up to the billionaires rigging the economy against working families.”
Dunlap is in a highly competitive race against Republican former Gov. Paul LePage to replace U.S. Rep. Jared Golden. Though Golden is a Democrat, the district trends conservative and has voted for President Donald Trump three times.
Whilemost pollsahead of the June primary had LePage ahead, a July poll released by the Dunlap campaign shows a close race, with Dunlap at 49%, LePage at 48% and 3% of voters undecided.
“The people of Maine deserve a congressman who will fight to lower their gas and grocery prices, protect their healthcare, and take on the DC special interests,” said Dunlap, who currently serves as state auditor and was the former secretary of state.
After Dunlap was bypassed in previous rounds of DCCC support, his Democratic primary opponent, Jordan Wood, accused the national party of “f—ing up another race in Maine.”
“We can win this race, and hopefully national Democrats will wake up,” he said in a video posted on X.
According to the DCCC, candidates earn a spot in the program by surpassing aggressive goals for grassroots engagement, local support, campaign organization, and fundraising.
