SPOKANE, Wash. – In a briefing for the cause of the Old Trails Fire, Sheriff John Nowels determined the cause to be arson. Sheriff Nowels announced that 37-year-old, Aaron Farinacci, was arrested for arson to the first degree.
At 5 p.m., Farinacci was brought into custody in Spokane and currently being interviewed. Spokane County holds Farinacci at a $1 million dollar bond.
A witness gave a description physically and clothing to Airway HeightsPolice after noticing him looking into the trees. The witness returned to their house and saw smoke coming from the area where they saw the man bending down.
Law enforcement first focused on evacuations and protecting life, but found the suspect less than a mile away from the fire. Â
DNR and Spokane County Major Crimes worked together to determine the fire origin.Â
Farinacci had waterproof matches and a butane lighter in his possession.
The investigation is still ongoing and other charges may come about as more circumstances of the fire come to light.
His first appearance will be tomorrow, August 3.
